From the treasure hunters point of view the situation is as follows.
If Sauniere’s unknown source of income was a found antique treasure he must have sold large quantities of found items. It is sure he had large sums of cash. However, there is no evidence that priest Sauniere ever sold a single relic. Or that he ever found anything at all. To me it seems that his income was associated with his position as a priest. Once he was sacked his finances deteriorated.
From all the treasure hunters who came to Rennes from the late 1950s on, there is not a single known find. Two archaeological digs performed at the church revealed nothing ordinary. By far the best way to make money out of Rennes is to write books. Or to serve the tourists. Actually, there are attempts to link other places in the region with Sauniere’s secret so the money stream can be directed there as well.
As far as Sauniere’s treasure story is concerned I think searching Rennes is futile. On the other hand the region has seen interesting historic activies and the village Rennes was build on a visigtoh’s castle named Rhedae (several different spellings are known). So I can imagine that some people, while chasing Saunieres non-existing treasure, came across some nice existing relics. There are many places like this in southern France, the old Aquitaine. And most of them are unsearched and not visited by 50.000 tourists a year.
